Intrigues
Any character can be targeted with a scheme in accordance with the plans of the schemer. Each character can run one scheme of each type at the same time. Ongoing schemes can be canceled at any point. Various events can take place during a scheme.
Some traits, characteristic or statuses of the schemer and target can influence various values in a scheme. A hideous character, for example, would take significant penalty in seducing others. Higher-ranked characters are harder to be targeted by lower-ranked ones.
Scheme mechanics
Each scheme has 2 values to keep track of:
- Modèle:Icon/s Success Chance determines how likely it is for the scheme to succeed when it is executed and grows over time.
- Modèle:Icon/s Phase Length determines how fast the scheme progresses. On Personal schemes it determines when the scheme completes and on Hostile and Political schemes it determines how long does it take to gain Advantage.
Hostile and Political schemes have 4 additional values.
- Modèle:Icon/s Potential determines the maximum Success Chance. The schemer's skills can give up to 30% Potential, with the rest coming from agents. Potential cannot exceed 95% except for contract schemes.
- Modèle:Icon/s Secrecy determines how likely it is for a scheme to remain undetected by the target. The chance for the scheme to be discovered upon execution is equal to the missing Secrecy and the chance for the scheme to gain a Breach each month is equal to a tenth of the missing Secrecy. Secrecy has no effects during Grace. Grace is normally six months, but raises to ten months with the Fichier:Node intrigue.png Court of Shadows perk.
- Fichier:Scheme breach.png Breaches is how many times the scheme has been breached and reduces Success Chance. If it reaches 5 the scheme automatically fails.
- Fichier:Scheme opportunity.png Advantage are used to execute the scheme or offered as enticements to agents. Once at least 5 Advantage has been obtained, the scheme can be executed. Alternatively it may be executed using 10, 15 or 20 Advantage to gain +5%, +10% or +20% Success Chance but it cannot increase it above the scheme's maximum success chance. A scheme starts with 1 Advantage for every 5 points of Modèle:Icon/i Intrigue the schemer has over 15.
Scheme Types
Hostile schemes
Hostile schemes use agents and secrecy. If secrecy fails the targeted character will gain an imprisonment reason on the schemer. Hostile schemes cannot target the schemer's own children unless the schemer has the Modèle:Icon/s Sadistic trait.

Political schemes
Modèle:Expansion Political schemes are only available between characters with Modèle:Icon/g Administrative, Modèle:Icon/c Celestial, Modèle:Icon/r Ritsuryō, Modèle:Icon/m Meritocratic or Modèle:Icon/m Meritocratic Khanate government that are in the same realm. They have no failure effects beyond giving Modèle:Icon/s Stress, the only exception being Raid Estate. If a vassal is discovered performing the scheme the liege will consider them a Modèle:Icon/ccriminal unless the character obtained a remit. If the liege is discovered performing the scheme they will become rivals with the target.

Mandala schemes
Modèle:Expansion Mandala schemes are only available to rulers with Modèle:Icon/m Mandala government who have the Fichier:Aspect of trickery small.png Aspect of Trickery. Both schemes can only target the same ruler once every 5 years and do not use secrecy. The skill used in both schemes is Modèle:Icon/i Intrigue
- Fichier:Icon scheme coerce contribution.png Leverage ContributionModèle:Anchor is only available while a great project is underway and has unfunded contributions. If the scheme succeeds the target funds a random contribution of the great project, gains +15 Modèle:Icon/o Opinion and progresses towards forming a friendship. If the scheme fails the schemer gains +20 Modèle:Icon/s Stress and the target gains -5 Modèle:Icon/o General Opinion for 10 years.
- Fichier:Icon scheme coerce tributary.png Coerce TributaryModèle:Anchor is only available if the Mandala Aspect is at level 2 or higher and can only target rulers of higher title rank if the Mandala Aspect is at maximum level. If the scheme succeeds the target becomes a Fichier:Tributary mandala.png Tributary and gains +30 Modèle:Icon/o Opinion. If the target was already a tributary of another suzerain, its suzerain will have the option to lose the tributary and 75 Modèle:Icon/p Prestige and 50 Modèle:Icon/l Legitimacy, pay 250 Modèle:Icon/p Piety and scales Modèle:Icon/g Gold to cancel the scheme, or go to war against the tributary regardless of truces.
Agents
Most hostile and political schemes can have up to 5 agents - adult characters who contribute to the scheme. Only the target's courtiers, guests and direct vassals can be invited as agents and only if they are not imprisoned or part of another scheme. Agents come in many types, which determines what scheme stat they will increase and which skills and traits will increase their contribution. The contribution of each agent is capped at +50. A scheming character is protected from discovery while the scheme progresses but its agents are not.
Once a scheme has started, characters can be invited into the agent slots. Acceptance depends on the agent's Modèle:Icon/o Opinion of the schemer and the schemer's skills and decreases with the title rank of the scheme's target of if the target is in another realm. Your relationship with the agent can have a large impact (+100 Best Friend, +50 Friend, +25 Lover), as can personality (see #Agent Personality below), and potential enticements (one section below). Characters who are Modèle:Icon/t terrified of the scheme target will never become agents except through the use of a Modèle:Icon/s Strong Hook. Some scheme events may give the option to add a new agent slot to an active scheme.
Each agent can also contribute to their agent type scheme stat regardless of their exact agent type based on their closeness to the scheme target. Having the target's Modèle:Icon/s Spymaster as an agent adds as much success chance as the Spymaster has Modèle:Icon/i Intrigue.

Agent Personality
Some agents are more likely than others to engage in hostile scheming based on their AI Personality (the following discussion does not apply to political schemes other than Raid Estate and in some cases may be the opposite, like Compassionate characters getting a bonus to Promote schemes). The character personality title (such as "Content Zealot") gives clues about how the character will respond to scheming based on their strongest personality aspects, but the title doesn't matter as much as the hidden real personality values (Boldness, Compassion, and so on). For example, a character that is a Knave (only notable trait is slight dishonor) could still suffer a small acceptance penatly for "immoral" because their slight dishonor doesn't overcome their modest compassion.
- Most characters (even generous characters like Lackeys) face a -10 acceptance penalty for "nothing to gain" unless they dislike the target. Greedy characters (like Rapacious characters or Raveners) suffer -35 acceptance for nothing to gain unless they get a title from the target's death. However, they get twice the acceptance from Modèle:Icon/g gold bribes (+20 instead of +10) and removes the nothing to gain penalty.
- Low Boldness face a -10 acceptance penalty for "too dangerous". For Cowardly characters (like Spineless characters or Cravens), this increases to -100, and the penalty stacks with "Modèle:Icon/i Intimidated/Modèle:Icon/t Terrified by Target"
- Most Compassionate characters (Gracious or Empaths) have a larger immoral penalty (-40), which scales downward until it becomes a bonus for Evil Villains (+10)!
- Characters with even a little Vengefulness will get a large (+40) bonus to scheme against someone who has slighted them, even if they are not rivals.
- Religious characters (Believers and Zealots) will be more willing to scheme against someone who is of an astray religion (+10 to +25), doubled for hostile or evil (+20 to +50).
Scheme type agents
This table includes a quick reference of the types of assassins for each scheme arrangement with the most relevant skills (size indicates relevance). For full details on beneficial traits, see agent tables below.
Scheme potential agents
The following agents increase Modèle:Icon/s Scheme Potential. The Eunuch agent type is only available for agents with the Modèle:Icon/e Eunuch or Modèle:Icon/b Beardless Eunuch trait and requires either the schemer or the target's culture to have the Court Eunuchs, Byzantine Traditions or Palace Politics tradition. The Devotee agent type can only be added by events from having a positive Camp Temperament.

Countermeasure focus
Each character can choose a Countermeasure Focus, which will give them a bonus against certain schemes but cause various penalties. They come in three tiers. Tier 2 countermeasure focuses are unlocked by the Modèle:Icon/p Paranoid trait or the Palace Politics tradition. Tier 3 countermeasures are unlocked by certain traditions, tenets or traits. Domiciles can unlock some Tier 2 or 3 countermeasures.
Most countermeasures affect all members of the court, with the exception of "Withdraw from View" which only affects the ruler using the countermeasure.
